2023 Clos de la Bonnette "Roc d'Ucarisse" Condrieu

Absolutely outstanding Condrieu! I love Viognier when it's done right. It's super aromatic with freshly made apricot preserve dominating the bouquet. On the palate it's dry and mineral but also supple with peach, apricot and honey notes. Finish is long with saline acidity lingering on and on. The balance of fruit and mineral components is superb here and it's not an easy thing to achieve. Truly wonderful wine!

Yum yum, I love Viognier, and this is very exceptional Viognier. There's this super pretty honeyed apricot note on the very front of the nose, and it's the very first thing I smelled as I lifted the glass, it put me in such a good mood. There's white flowers, and white tea as well all playing around, with a little bit of dried lemon peel in the very back. The palate is similar, the fruit is very ripe and lush, peaches, apricots - both fresh and dried, all drizzled with honey, though the wine is unabashedly dry. There's a softer acidity here, typical for the region, but it makes it no less delicious, there's definitely some barrel notes at the tail end of the palate. This is just a fantastic wine, impeccably made and just really freaking delicious, with more complexity than you might typically expect from a white wine, this is not just a quaffer, this is a thinker, in the best of ways - a wine worth pondering.

Notes

Condrieu is a particularly small region in the Northern Rhone that solely produces Viognier--but not just any Viognier. Simply put, these are the best in the world, and Condrieu is the benchmark by which all other Viognier is measured. Domaine Clos de la Bonnette was purchased in 1992 by wife and husband team, Isabelle Guiller and Henri Montabonnet. Henri and Isabelle restored this dormant property, restacking the walls by hand and replanting the vineyards. With no close neighbors, a natural barrier exists which allows them to more easily produce organically, a process by which they have farmed since they began replanting. The quality of the fruit is so high that Marcel Guigal wanted to purchase their grapes and put them under contract. Thankfully, they politely declined.
