The 2022 Vouvray Le Clos is a ripe edition of this wine-full and round with a silken texture. But, it still manages to keep itself together and refined, which is the sign of old vines on a good site. It’s quite focused despite its richness, with a sense of lift and spirit on the finish, leaving you wanting more. Nectarine, floral and pastry notes linger on the long finish. (RG)

This wine has a lovely nose of green apple layered with Fuji pear, honeysuckle, white blossom and lemon citrus. The dry white is fresh and bright with lively acidity that persists. Introduce friends to Vouvray with this bottle so they understand what Chenin Blanc can do. (RS)

The flagship cuvée from Vincent, from vines just above the house and cellars, the 2022 Le Clos opens with an attractive and scented nose, impressing with notes of fresh white peach, lemon peel, crushed chalk, verbena and a trace of mint. This has a sense of balance that Vincent’s other cuvées parcellaires can only strive for in this vintage, and while it too reveals a bold and peppery substance on the palate, it also retains a touch of that white peach and white chalk purity set in a finely textured frame. Even in a warm and dry vintage such as 2022, you can still sense the limestone freshness coming through here, giving it drive and definition, running into a long and delightfully bitter finish.

Warm apple and quince flavors are fleshy and round in this nicely concentrated Vouvray, infused with attractive spice notes and a kick of quinine. A silky-textured version, showing a good balance of richness and freshness, powered by succulent acidity through the savory, bitter lime peel-etched finish. (KB)

Notes

Vincent Carême, together with his wife Tania, founded Domaine Vincent Carême in 1999 in the Vouvray region of the Loire Valley. The Le Clos cuvée is one of Vincent’s top wines and sees 12 months in third-fill barrels prior to bottling. This strengthens the wine’s textural richness on the palate and gives excellent structure. One of the great aspects of Chenin Blanc is its ability to age gracefully, thanks to its naturally high acidity. While the wine does drink beautifully now and displays plenty of fresh orchard fruit, it should develop honeyed aromas and exotic spice notes with a few more years in bottle and would be a treat to pair with roasted game birds.
