Purplish tinge in the glass. Aromas of cloves, generous bramble fruit and dried eucalyptus. The attack is firm and dense, with a full body and velvety tannins of great extraction on the mid-palate and refreshing natural acidity. Good integration of oak at the end.

2021 was a demanding but ultimately rewarding vintage in much of Tuscany, with a warm March encouraging an early budbreak. The summer was hot and dry, with some welcome rain arriving in early September. Warm and sunny days returned for harvest. This is a wine with great potential but at this stage it is still quite closed. ‘We do very little racking to avoid oxygen during ageing,’ states general manager Jérôme Poisson. With time in the glass, fleshy black and blue fruit aromas and flavours emerge, along with hints of Mediterranean scrub. Velvety tannins keep a tight grip, while the fruit sapidity is underlined by a lovely vein of salinity and a ferrous twist. Long and poised, some savoury, earthy elements make themselves known on the finish. (JB)

This is a vintage that shows the successful evolution in this wine, with generous brambled raspberry, pomegranate, rosemary, underbrush, olive, anis, cocoa and grilled rosemary. There is intensity to the flavours, plenty of Tuscan sunshine, with excellent integration of the tannins, and a bounce of fresh acidities.

Dense and concentrated, this red is packed with black currant, blackberry and plum fruit, while iron, wild herb and oak spice notes add detail. Assertive tannins and vibrant acidity provide support, bringing a sense of equilibrium overall. There's fine depth to the dark fruit flavors, plus a terrific aftertaste that really persists. Shows power and grace. (BS)

The 2021 Caiarossa Toscana showcases perfect harmony between Bordeaux grape varieties and Tuscan soil characteristics at this Italian biodynamic winery. This flagship wine unites Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah, Petit Verdot, Sangiovese and Granache grapes which grow in the mineral-rich Val di Cecina soils of Riparbella's coastal hills. Since the early 2000s this amazing winery has operated under biodynamic principles. The Casteja family who also owns Château Batailley has transformed the estate into a leading Super Tuscan reference point in Tuscany. The 2021 vintage presents itself as a refined wine with dark cherry, blackberry and black plum flavors accompanied by licorice and incense and graphite and fresh herbs. The wine presents itself as both plush and structured with fine-grained tannins that lead to a deep core of fruit before finishing with cedar and crushed stone and dried flowers. A must-have for fans of Ornellaia, Sassicaia, or Masseto who seek authenticity over flash.

Pick up a bottle tonight for either the cellar or to pair with dinner tonight! The full-bodied, chewy tannic structure is robust yet well integrated despite its relative youth. The savory leather undertones are wonderfully complimented by resinous, incense-like herbal aromas that open up tremendously with a generous decant. It will be a pleasure to see how the 2021 continues to gain complexity as it ages.

What strikes me about this wine is that despite being driven by Bordeaux varietals, the nose, palate and sense of place is unmistakably Tuscan. The wild herbs, dusty terracotta earth, hints of leather, deep plummy fruit all transport me instantly back to my time explore the hills of Tuscany. The wine has a wonderful combination of pure, deep, ripe fruit, but also picks up on savory aspects and flora and fauna around. Polished and approachable but with a wonderfully authentic spirit of it's origin. Certainly this wine can be drunk now with a splash in the decanter, but there's plenty of life ahead of it where I think it will continue to gain complexity and nuance.

Caiarossa is a standout biodynamic estate located on the Tuscan coast in the Riparbella region, producing elegant and complex wines from a blend of both Bordeaux and Tuscan varietals. This Super Tuscan is a blend of Sangiovese, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Petit Verdot, Syrah, and Alicante. The wine showcases Caiarossa’s commitment to organic and biodynamic farming practices, which emphasize harmony with the environment and result in wines of great purity and expression. The Caiarossa Rosso is a powerful yet elegant Super Tuscan that embodies the diversity and complexity of its vineyard’s terroir. Its balance of ripe fruit, fine tannins, and savory notes makes it a wine that can be enjoyed now, but it also has the potential to age beautifully for many years.
