2023 Franck Millet "Insolite" Sancerre

K&L Buyer
Review Date: 10/2025

Whenever the Insolite disappears from our shelves, my inbox lights up with requests asking when it will be back. The good news: the new vintage has finally arrived—and it’s in outstanding form. More full-bodied than the regular Sancerre, the Insolite comes from the Millets’ limestone-rich vineyards, which produce wines with greater depth and intensity. Expect notes of grapefruit and lemon custard, underpinned by mouthwatering minerality and a delicate touch of salinity on the finish. Still just getting started, this wine will continue to evolve beautifully over the next few years—or, if you’re like me, just a few more minutes in the glass. I can’t wait to open another bottle soon.

It's always a pleasure to see the newest Insolite come into stock each year. If you aren't already a groupie, grab a bottle and you'll immediately understand the almost cult-like following this wine has garnered here among staff and customers alike. This is one of my go-to recommendations for Sauvignon Blanc if you want to experience a pure expression of the famous "mineral" character that Sancerre is known for.

Yay! Insolite is back! This is year after year one of my favorite wines from Sancerre that we carry, and I know I'm not alone. The nose is very mineral-forward, like crushed stones and citrus, with little whisps of something tropical around the fringes. The palate is chalky and clean, if those two things can really mix, but I just said they did so here we are, I suppose. It's got enough acidity that the chalk on the palate never really stays, but kind of expresses itself early and then lets itself out the side door, the acidity pushes through everything and the fruit on the palate is really light and pretty, little touches of citrus with maybe a gooseberry all propelled by mineral and acid. This is less tropical than it has been, but maybe a little bit better as well, I think it's very classic and easy, this is everything I wanted it to be and now I'm a little happier than I was before trying it.

Notes

One of K&L's very finest buys from France, this is a reserve cuvée, made from Millet's chalkiest limestone soils. There is a long maceration at very low temperatures to extract as much flavor and character as possible. The resulting wine is intensely charged with stone fruit and minerality, and bright citrus notes. The wines of this family domaine have been a staple here at K&L since the 1994 vintage when Franck and Betty Millet drove a long way (to Beaune!) on Easter Sunday to meet Clyde and crew to present the wines. We love these wines for their freshness, charm and affordability. The Insolite is all from the Caillotes (Oxfordian limestone) in their holdings. The Millets are so proud of this soil, a few souvenir rocks are included in the wooden six packs in which the wine is shipped.
