The 2017 Châteauneuf Du Pape checks in as 48% Grenache, 30% Syrah, and 22% Mourvèdre brought up largely in foudres, with small amounts in old barrels and concrete tanks. Deeply colored (more so than normal) with powerful notes of blackberries, currants, ground pepper, leafy herbs, and hints of seaweed wrappers (think sushi wrappers), it hits the palate with a full-bodied concentrated, powerful style that carries polished tannins, ample fruit, and a great finish.

Glistening ruby-red. Expansive, oak-spiced black and blue fruit and candied lavender aromas show sharp delineation, and a hint of garrigue builds with air. Stains the palate with sappy cassis, boysenberry and spicecake flavors that smoothly blend richness and energy. Fine-grained tannins sneak in stealthily on an impressively long, penetrating finish that echoes the vanilla and floral notes. (JR)

Domaine Sénéchaux has turned out a lovely 2017 Chateauneuf du Pape. Pencil shavings accent mixed red and black cherries on the nose, adding hints of baking spices and vanilla. It's a blend of 48% Grenache, 30% Syrah and 22% Mourvèdre, aged mainly in foudres, with some barrels mixed in, and 10% staying in concrete tanks. Full-bodied, supple, ripe and intense, it's modern in style and hits all the marks yet retains a sense of restraint. Tasted twice (once blind), with consistent results. (JC)

This is a plump, hedonistic blend of Grenache, Syrah and Mourvèdre that pulsates with luscious strawberry, raspberry and fig flavors. It's a sultry, supple sip marked with just a hint of leather and edged by fine, velveteen tannins. (AI)

Notes

Domaine Sénéchaux lies in the heart of what is known as the Sheriff's Wood - Les Bois Sénéchaux. The current landscape of the property was developed primarily in the 1950s and tended by the Raynaud family. In 2006, the estate was purchased by the Jean-Michel Cazes of Lynch-Bages fame and its newest iteration began. The wines are made classically but with a modern eye towards deriving the best from each grape. The blend is made up of 47% Grenache, 32% Syrah, 19% Mourvèdre, and a mix of 2% Cinsault and Vaccarèse. Syrah and Mourvèdre are aged in one-year-old barrels from Lynch-Bages while the Grenache sees a mix of some wood and large vat. The composition is always a seamless blend of the best that this region has to offer.
