Very heady from the start, this wine is lifted with fresh rose and jasmine, layered seamlessly over vibrant red cherry and sweet baking spice. The palate is full-bodied with white pepper and clove cutting through the richness of the midpalate. Notes of soft fruit, rose and lingering baking spice carry through a long, textured finish. Decant if opening now, or let it rest in the cellar through 2035+.(AC)

Lots of darker fruits, graphite, and roasted garrigue emerge from the 2022 Gigondas, a medium-bodied, structured 2022 that, while it's not yet bottled, certainly looks to be an outstanding wine in the making. (JD)

When Thibaud Chamfort showed me his new Gigondas vineyards back in 2022, his excitement was palpable. He had just acquired the property, already fully planted, and he knew the potential of this site was outstanding. In the years since, I kept asking him, “When are these going to be ready?” Well, the wait is over—and it was worth it. The debut release is a treat: lush and complex, with gorgeous red fruit tones—deep framboise, strawberry coulis, and a touch of currant. Layers of spice, lavender, and fennel round out the palate beautifully. We’ve long admired Thibaud’s wines, from his bright and approachable Côtes du Rhône to his expressive Rasteau, but this new Gigondas shows how much his winemaking has evolved. In the cellar, he’s embraced a “less is more” philosophy, allowing the vineyards to speak as clearly as possible—and they have plenty to say.

Notes

The Verquière estate has been passed down from father to son for four generations and is now managed by Thibaut Chamfort. Following age-old traditions and sustainable practices, the estate was certified organic in 2014. Following their wines for many years, we were happy to add them to our Direct Import portfolio in 2015. The Gigondas is a blend of 80% Grenache, 15% Syrah and 5% Mourvèdre from vines averaging 50 years of age all planted in the chalky-clay and limestone scree (shattered rocks) of the surrounding mountains, the Dentelles de Montmirail. All fruit is hand harvested, the Grenache is not destemmed and fermentation takes place in concrete vats. This savory red has red fruit flavors, garrigue (coastal scrub) and peppery notes. A perfect compliment to grilled meats and rich stews.
