For our classic Barolo, I turned to a rising-star estate whose meticulous vineyard work in the stunning 2021 vintage produced a wine of incredible purity and elegance. This is the definition of a "discovery." The wine offers soaring aromatics of pure red fruits—crushed raspberry, cherry, and rose petal—with a vibrant, energetic palate supported by fine, silky tannins. It’s a beautifully transparent and fragrant Barolo that captures the finesse of the vintage. It’s a chance to get in on the ground floor with a future star of the region.

It's all about the texture here for me - that firm, almost towel-like grip that dries your palate just enough to make the fruit pop. Then, in comes this wave of soft, red fruit that feels both lush and refined. It's classic Barolo structure with a modern wink - serious bones, but it knows how to have a little fun. Give it a swirl and a minute to stretch, and it turns downright charming.

Here is a gateway Barolo, even if you get no further than the nose. For me, that is one of the most important features of wines from this appellation. The almost dried fruit is integrated with the dried floral and a savory mix of aromas that is hard to pin down. Nothing stands out, and it all works together, making you want to keep on smelling it to tease it apart. On the palate, this is young Barolo. It is vibrant and well-structured. The fruit tones are fresher than the nose, the tannins are very present, and the savory tones have receded to the background on the mineral-driven finish. This is a wine that requires a meal, and would definitely benefit from a little time in the cellar. However, after about an hour decanting, it was delicious.

Our 2021 Discovery Series Italy Barolo is on the savory side with plum, dried cherry, finely ground black pepper, and graphite. This may sound strange but I get whispers of black pepper and cherry blossoms on the finish—it's undeniable. This is a dressy wine to wrap a meal around. I vote for a luscious steak or an assortment of grilled veggies and mushrooms served over polenta.

Notes

A 93-point (JS) Barolo that typically commands $60 elsewhere, secured exclusively for our Discovery Series. Out of the hundreds of Barolos tasted in Piedmont every year, this is the bottle that stood out. We aren't just looking for standard quality; we're hunting for electric tension, pinpoint precision, and the true soul of the Langhe. We can't reveal the iconic estate behind the label, but this structurally flawless Nebbiolo speaks with striking clarity.
