The Mosconi cru in Monforte d'Alba is famous for its powerful, structured, and long-lived Barolos. In a phenomenal vintage like 2021, the wines are electric. A producer I work with, known for their modern-classic style, usually blends their small parcel of Mosconi into their main Barolo. The quality was so exceptional this year that I convinced them to bottle it separately for us. The result is a powerhouse: dark cherry, plum, crushed rock, and balsamic notes are supported by massive but noble tannins. This is a profound, site-specific Barolo that demands time in the cellar and will reward the patient collector handsomely.

The Mosconi bottling turns the charm up a notch - deep, polished, and quietly confident. Plush red fruit glides through layers of fine tannin, all balanced by that classic Barolo backbone. There's power here, but it moves with grace - more runway strut than gym flex. Give it a little air and it starts to purr showing just how smooth it can be. Elegant now, it promises even more intrigue as it slowly opens over the next few years.

I absolutely love wines from Piedmont, and it is difficult to top a really good Barolo or Barbaresco. Add "value" into the mix and ding, ding, ding...it's a winner. Which is what this Barolo is! Combine that with fantastic quality grape sourcing and what else can you ask for? This release is a bit more traditionally styled with generous herbs and moderate earth. It starts off with a pretty floral nose laced with herbs and fills out in the mouth with darker red fruits. Black cherry, savory herbs, drying tannins. Remember Red Vines licorice? Ever have their black licorice? Well, it also has flavors of that. Not the Aussie licorice, which is heavier. The finish is long and harkens back to the nose of meat roasting herbs and dried flowers. So nice for such an affordable price!

I think our 'Discovery Series' really nailed it with this excellent bottle of Barolo. Single vineyard, great vintage, value driven, and it is absolutely delicious. Pretty flavors of dark cherries, savory dried herbs, aged leather, with a touch of menthol on the long spicy finish. Cheers!

Notes

Sourcing a great Barolo is one thing. Securing a single-vineyard bottling from one of the region's most revered Crus is something else entirely. This is a bit of a coup. For our Discovery Series, we have found a jaw-dropping 2021 Barolo from the famed Mosconi cru in Monforte d'Alba. This is a rare opportunity to taste the singular voice of a specific, hallowed piece of ground—a wine of profound depth, power, and complexity.
