2023 Aurore Dezat "Les Montaignes" Sancerre

K&L Buyer
Review Date: 10/2025

Sourced from a small parcel opposite the famed Les Chasseignes vineyard, Montaignes sits on a northwest-facing slope rich in clay and Kimmeridgian marl. The wine is harvested and fermented in a mix of amphora and stainless steel, highlighting its purity and texture. As with most sites rooted in marl, there’s an inherent weight and density that promise further evolution with time in bottle. Today, it shows bold intensity balanced by notes of lime gelée, green apple, and dried pineapple. Long and lingering on the finish, Montaignes is poised to develop beautifully over the next several years.

This wonderful Sancerre takes things to the next level. It's fuller and rounder than their regular cuvee and the use of some amphora along with a small amount of large oak barrels adds complexity and textural depth and roundness. The finish is long and satisfying. Great on its own but it shines at the dinner table.

Notes

The wines of Aurore Dezat are a regular feature in our wine club offerings, and her vibrant Sancerre is an easy favorite among K&L staff as well. Aurore makes wine on her family estate in Sury-en-Vaux, which was established by her grandfather. Before Aurore took over the estate, most of the fruit was sold off through négociants. She has slowly phased out the négociant contracts. The estate is more than just vines, with grain crops and farm animals also finding a home there, but for Aurore, the focus is on the wine. She farms organically and emphasizes the importance of the three soil types present on the estate. With her grapes growing on limestone, flint (or silex), and clay, Aurore can produce wines that have a real depth of character.
