2023 Aurore Dezat "Les Chasseignes" Sancerre

Review Date: 10/2025

We met Aurore Dezat over a decade ago and were immediately taken with her wines. At the time, she had just assumed control of her family’s vineyards, which had long sold most of their fruit under contract. As she began reclaiming the holdings, Aurore started producing some remarkably engaging Sancerres under her own name. Not long after, she introduced “Les Chasseignes”—a cuvée named for the rocky lieu-dit near her winery. The site yields particularly intense fruit, and Aurore quickly recognized it deserved to stand apart from her classic Sancerre. A portion of the wine is aged in large neutral wood, lending a subtle creaminess that beautifully offsets its concentration and vibrant acidity. This is a superb rendition of Sancerre—structured yet elegant—and continues to stand among the best values on our shelves, especially for those who love a Sauvignon Blanc with both power and poise.

Notes

A family domaine that has been run by third-generation winemaker Aurore Dezat since 2011. Dezat farms 13 hectares of Sauvignon Blanc and Pinot Noir in the commune of Sury-en-Vaux with her partner David Girard. The Sauvignon Blanc is planted over limestone gravel known as Caillottes and the famed Kimmeridgian marl known as Terres Blanches. Les Chasseignes comes from a single parcel that is all on Terres Blanches. This marl is know for producing wines of richness with an underlying tension. The wine is fermented and aged in a mix of stainless steel tank and large oak barrels adding to the texture.
