A light rustic note lifts initially from the 2021 Rosso Di Montalcino, but it blows off so quickly and is so well-integrated into the wine, I'm hesitant to even say it was there, since I find it quite attractive. The wine displays a jeweled ruby color and offers notes of pristine candied cherries, ripe tannins that are well-defined, and a lovely lozenge-like feel. It's going to drink well over the coming 10 years.

This beautiful wine will be released in March 2025 with 4,666 bottles produced. The Pian dell'Orino 2021 Rosso di Montalcino is extremely focused and precise. It remains a little closed at this young stage, but that quality gives us even more confidence in a successful bottle evolution. Fruit is sourced from various vineyard plots. There is a hint of greenness that should relax with time, and the wine shows tart cherry fruit, rye bread and a hint of red beer. (ML) 93+

Do not let the category fool you—Pian dell’Orino’s Rosso is not second wine. The vineyard harvests young Sangiovese grapes from mineral-rich terrain at 320-meter elevation. The 2021 vintage brings forth complex scents of red cherry and blood orange with crushed herbs that lead to a refined structure and enduring savory notes. The wine presents itself with exceptional clarity and elegance while offering the potential to age.

Notes

Pian dell'Orino’s 2021 Rosso di Montalcino is an exceptionally refined and vibrant expression of Sangiovese, reflecting the estate’s biodynamic philosophy and meticulous vineyard work. The nose is pure and aromatic, with red cherry, pomegranate, and rose petal, lifted by notes of blood orange, wild herbs, and crushed stone. On the palate, it’s sleek and energetic, with fine tannins and bright acidity framing a core of fresh red fruit and savory depth. The finish is long and mineral-driven, with lingering floral and herbal nuances. A precise, elegant Rosso with remarkable clarity and focus.
