Aromas of flinty graphite, violet and rose, with some herbal notes, like thyme. Light-bodied with light extraction and very fine tannins. It’s really quite feathery, but has good intensity nonetheless, and a saline finish. Delicate for a 2022, but it has good length. Very Burgundian, between Morey-St-Denis and Côte-Rôtie. You'd have to pair this carefully with food, lighter dishes with subtle flavouring. 50% destemmed. Les Côtes is a blend of different parcels: Côte Blonde, Le Combard, Lancement and Côte Brune. Bottled the day before tasting. (MW)

With 40% whole clusters, Barge's 2022 Les Cotes wafts from the glass with aromas of ripe dark berries, spices, licorice, pepper and cassis mingled with a delicate, toasty note. Medium to full-bodied, broad and enveloping for a Côte Rôtie, it's perfectly balanced, textured and harmonious, with a fleshy core of fruit and a vibrant, energetic finish. Less dense than Coeur de Combard, this blend of 95% Syrah and 5% Viognier is an outstanding wine in the making. It's approachable now but also built to evolve with grace over the next decade or so. Red and blue fruits, crushed flowers, and beautiful minerality all emerge from the 2022 Côte Rôtie Les Côtes. Medium to full-bodied, concentrated, and structured, it has plenty of ripe tannins, nicely integrated acidity, and a focused, perfumed style that's classic and age-worthy. 92+

I am really enjoying how different all of these wines are, the Domaine Barge wines seem to have a more savory kind of take and this one is no exception to that. There's dusty fruit there, black cherry, raspberry flower, a little something dark and inky, but then the savory kicks in with tar and a little bit of leather, there's a lot of complexity there and I feel like there's some neutral barrel spice buried in the pleasant mire towards the end. The palate is similar, with a savory dark note piercing through every piece of fruit there, and then on the finish there's inky fruit and barrel spice in a neck and neck race. This is delicious and definitely for someone who is looking for a dark and very slightly chewy Cote Rotie.

Notes

Domaine Barge is a small historic estate in Cote-Rotie. The Barge family goes back to the 1860s in the region and were instrumental in having the appellation recognized in the AOC sytem back in 1940. Julien Barge took over the winemaking from his father Gilles Barge in 2018 and began making moves towards more organic farming and production. Total ownership is around 5.7 hectares of Cote-Rotie, 1 hectare of Condrieu and 1.5 hectares of St-Joseph. Les Cotes is a blend of diffferent parcels from the Cote Blonde, Cote Brune and Combard vineyards. The wine is made with 95% Syrah and 5% Viognier. Grapes are fermented with native yeasts, partial whole cluster and spend 28 months aging in 600L oak barrels.
