2004 Krug Brut Champagne
97
Decanter
Review Date: 04/2024A rich nose of baked cheesecake and Madeira cake, this 2004 is bold and expressive, exploding in the mouth with citrus intensity and creamy luxury. Layering Custard Cream biscuits over sweet candied lemon rind, marzipan sweetness and creamy oats, the finish remains hyper fresh with a mineral underlay. Textured like fine silk, this is expressive and approachable now, playing the richness of butterscotch against white florals and candied peach, all underpinned by long, flowing acidity. Following the widespread heatwave of 2003, the 2004 growing season started fairly cool, yet final yields were generous. (NE)

Notes
The late released 2004 vintage from Krug is composed of 39% Chardonnay, 37% Pinot Noir, and 24% Meunier. As the maison describes, "The wines of the year [2004] were at once highly expressive, bright and undeniably elegant. The vivacity, tension, and citrus notes of the Meuniers and the shining Chardonnays combined with the backbone of the Pinot Noir gave rise to a very balanced year. Combining generosity and precision, elegance and character, Krug 2004 tells the vibrant story of a fresh year."
