Grown on clay-limestone and marl, the fruit is hand-picked with no destemming, and is aged in old foudres. The wine is pretty, bright and open, with raspberry, strawberry and violet fruits. It's barely medium-bodied, but has a lovely expression of fresh and easy red berry fruits, accompanied by a juicy berry acidity and gentle blackberry-skin tannins on the finish. An easy-going and highly drinkable Gigondas. Just lovely. (MW)

The classic 2017 Gigondas Tradition cuvée from this estate is a real winner as well as a smoking value. A blend of 80% Grenache and 10% each of Syrah and Mourvèdre that wasn’t destemmed and was aged all in foudre, it boasts a deep purple color as well as full-bodied aromas and flavors of ground pepper, incense, garrigue, and assorted sweet black fruits. This rounded, sexy, seamless 2017 has polished tannins, a great mid-palate, and a finish that keeps you coming back to the glass. Drink this beauty any time over the coming decade. Drink through 2029.

The aromas that I found exotic and lavender-like last year are now more mundane notes of damp hay and herbs. The 2017 Gigondas Tradition still has plenty of ripe cherry and raspberry fruit, and it remains full-bodied, creamy and lush, though with perhaps a touch of warmth on the finish. (JC)

Brilliant violet color. Suave, highly perfumed scents of red berry liqueur, exotic and smoky minerals, along with a lively floral overtone. Offers appealingly sweet black raspberry and lavender pastille flavors that are sharpened by white pepper and mineral flourishes. The berry and floral notes repeat strongly on a very long, supple finish that's framed by smoothly interwoven tannins. (JR)

Notes

Jean-Baptiste Meunier is the fifth generation winemaker behind the great property of Moulin de la Gardette in the Rhône region of Gigondas. We have been working with him since the mid-90s and the wines have always been some of our favorites from the area. The region itself has stepped out of the shadow of neighboring Châteauneuf du Pape, creating wines of intensity and flavor that are distinctly their own. Gigondas has more south facing slopes and higher elevations as well as varied soils that help distinguish the region. The "Tradition" is a blend of Grenache, Mourvèdre and Syrah from vines averaging an age of 40 years. It is aged for about 18 months in mostly used foudre and demi-muid before bottling.
