Reviewed June 2024The altitude and freshness of Rivas de Tereso were an advantage in the heat of the 2022 growing season. This old-vine Tempranillo really over-delivers at the price, with very little oak, lots of zip and freshness, succulent strawberry and red cherry fruit and undertones of pine and wild thyme.

Wine Advocate
The young red 2022 Sierra de Toloño was produced with Tempranillo from old vines, and as such, with small percentages of other grapes always present in the old vineyards. It has notes of ripe berry fruit (it has 13.5% alcohol) and aromatic herbs, and it's juicy and velvety, with very fine tannins, contained ripeness and an approachable profile. It's impressive for the torrid year. 30,000 bottles produced. It was bottled in July 2023 after eight months in neutral 225-liter barrels and tinajas. (LG)

A balanced red, offering supple tannins enmeshed with a lively range of brambly blackberry and mulberry fruit flavors, plus accents of mountain herbs, mineral and espresso. Spiced finish. Drink now. (AN)
Notes
Made from small parcels of Tempranillo grown in the very foothills that give the winery it’s name. Sandra Bravo wants to make fresh wines that speak specifically of where they come from, Rioja Alavesa. The elevation, the high concentration of limestone in the soil, the cooling winds from the Tolono mountains give the fruit clarity and depth. The spontaneous fermentation and minimal intervention, and less than a year in older french barrels help soften the tannin and focus the fruit into a wine that speaks of the varietal and Alavesa.
