2019 Domaine Jean Grivot Vosne Romanee "Bossieres"

Decanter
Review Date: 10/2020Planted in 1959, the 0.73ha of vines in Bossières is just east of the village. The old vines, gentle extraction and maturation in cask, all give this a bit more fruit than the blended village-level wine, with a depth of flavour and a lovely delicate touch that sets it apart.(CC)

The 2019 Vosne-Romanée Bossières comes from a single parcel of vines. The bouquet is more savory than Grivot’s other cuvées, almost to the point where I had to ask Etienne whether there was any vendange entière in the blend. (The answer is no.) The palate is silky-smooth with fine acidity, and very fresh in the mouth, offering black cherries, blueberry and a saline tang on the aftertaste, almost briny in style. An intriguing, fascinating Vosne-Romanée.(NM)

Dense purple with a dark rim. Very good weight of fruit up front, though in its softer style, then a bit more structure behind, perhaps shows the heat a little more. Some toasty barrel notes too. Tasted: November 2020.

Firm reduction overshadows the fruit today. The rich but focused and solidly powerful medium-bodied flavors possess very good mid-palate density as well as outstanding length on the youthfully austere if decidedly warm finale. The warmth isn't really enough to detract from the overall sense of balance, but it would be fair to observe that this isn't quite as harmonious as the best of these villages level wines.
