2024 Domaine du Bagnol Cassis Rosé

The seaside village of Cassis is one of the most stunning regions to visit in southern France and the wines there capture their essence. Limestone soils situated in the shape of an amphitheater capture the Mediterranean sun and the cool oceanic breezes scent the wines. This is a dream place and there is no better encapsulation than Bagnol's Cassis Rose. Peach, apricot and strawberry abound. A light note of grapefruit peel pithiness lends more structure to the wine. That light salinity gives a boost of zestiness that will enrapture any humble imbiber. A bit poetic but Cassis is like a poem and this wine is always one of my favorite stanzas. Every year this ranks as one of my favorite in the rose category and this year is no different!

This tangy and fresh rosé is everything I could want from a crisp, Mediterranean seaside sipper. Floral and berry-forward, the mouth-watering acidity expertly balances with rich and fresh summer dishes like quiche and frittata. If you are looking for a pure expression of fruit that tastes freshly picked, this is a perfect French rosé for you.

A bit reductive at first whiff, despite how weird it might sound, this is a good rose to be decanted as it currently stands. With some time and swirling, a lot of pretty fruit starts to come out, raspberries, a little cranberry zest, and a little bit of rose flowers. The palate is light and crisp, super refreshing with some grapefruit pith and a super racy and ripping acid rushing through the whole palate. This is a rose for people who aren't afraid of that delicious bite of acidity on each sip, and for people who want a lighter rose overall. Absolutely delicious and lovely structure, this is definitely a rose that wants a little food to go with it.

Always pretty! Scents of oranges, raspberries and white peach. In the mouth, at the forefront, crisp with juicy citrus fruits. At the mid-palate, it stretches out with some nicely rich (and juicy) yellow peach flavors. Additional raspberry and sea salt flavors coming into play and the clean finish lingers at the back of the throat. Absolutely perfect for the warmer months that are coming up!

Notes

This rosé comes from a handful of parcels that total seven hectares of vineyards planted in clay and limestone soils, on a gentle north-northwest-facing slope. Grenache-dominated, with smaller percentages of Mourvedre and Cinsault. Like the Cassis Blanc, the wine is taut, fresh and slightly saline. The winery makes only a small quantity of this, making this extremely hard to find, but its deliciousness makes it highly sought after. Get yours before it's gone.
