Although it is close to their holding in Petite Chapelle, the soils are very different, and En Ergot lacks the thick limestone slabs that are only 30-40 cm below the surface in the former vineyard. Here, Trapet vinifies 50-60% of the crop as whole clusters and extract very gently (no punching down after the start of the vinification) to produce this expressive, accessible wine with bright red and black fruit and plenty of nuance. This wine will likely be ready to drink earlier than some of the other premier crus in this cellar.(CC)

The 2022 Gevrey-Chambertin Ergot 1er Cru has an exquisite bouquet with black cherry, wild strawberry and touches of pressed flowers. It blossoms in the glass. The palate is medium-bodied with svelte tannins and a touch of spice. It’s very harmonious and tender towards the finish that has a real sensuality. Pity this lieu-dit is not better known - this is gorgeous.(NM)

A fine bright fresh purple. Up to 50% whole bunches, which lift the floral side of the nose. The profile reminds Louis more of Clos Prieur than Petite Chapelle, which is the immediate neighbour. Concentrated energy, sort of a raw red fruit, but extends very well across the palate. Tension and intensity, with a crunchy red berry finish. Drink from 2030-2036. Tasted: November 2023.

Note: from a .32 ha holding Fresh, ripe and airy aromas are laced with soft earth, floral and spice whiffs. The delicious, vibrant and nicely detailed flavors are not especially dense though I do like the mouthfeel that contrasts somewhat with the moderately rustic, austere and powerful finish. This won't win any awards for refinement but there is already very good depth and overall, this should repay a decade or so of keeping.
