This exotic wine boasts aromas of passion fruit, pomelo and ripe yellow plums, touched with oyster shell and a hint of smoky reduction. There is rewarding richness here, but there is also plenty of fresh acidity and energy on the palate. The grapes are from the white marl soils of the well-protected, south-facing slopes in the village of Fleys, not far from the Mont de Milieu; it is one of the warmest premier cru sites on the right bank of the Serein. Open this wine in five years and drink it over the next 20.(CC)

Sourced from west- and south-facing plots, Samuel Billaud’s 2023 Chablis 1er Cru Fourneaux is a success. It wafts from the glass with a bouquet of lemon zest, oyster shell and white flowers. On the palate, the wine is medium to full-bodied, bright and tensile yet concentrated, with good depth, racy acidity and a pure, saline finish. It’s produced from purchased fruit. Samuel Billaud established his own state-of-the-art winery in the center of Chablis in 2009, and he has emerged as one of the village’s top four or five producers, crafting wines characterized by textural seamlessness and precision. Working with four hectares of organically farmed estate vineyards, supplemented by purchased grapes (for which Billaud decides the harvest date, and his team usually picks the fruit), harvesting of ripe yet vibrant fruit is the rule here. This is followed by fermentation at 16 to 20 degrees Celsius in stainless steel tank and/or used wood (mostly 500-liter barrels from Tonnellerie Chassin), then maturation for 13 months on the lees for Petit Chablis and Chablis Village and 15 to 18 months for the premier cru and grand cru bottlings. His wines are bright, nervy expressions of Chablis with plenty of concentration and length. Producing classy wines of crystalline purity, this address already belongs on any list of Chablis's best.(KK)

Brilliantly clean and overflowing with peak-perfect ripe fruits—it was the second wine Samuel harvested, this comes from Près-Girots and Fourneaux with an average vine age of 45 years. Yellow cherries, star fruits, honeycomb and ocean mist give this layers of complexity. Toasted baguette comes through on the smooth finish.(CC)

Burghound

Note: from Côte de Près Girots and Morein. A slightly riper but not exotic nose reflects a mix of white and yellow fleshed fruit trimmed in hints of quinine, sea breeze and soft wood. There is once again excellent volume to the solidly powerful and concentrated medium-bodied flavors that coat the palate on the impressively long finish. This does flirt with rusticity but if bold and muscular Chablis appeals, look no further. *Burghound Outstanding!*

Fourneaux is known as a warm vineyard site and the 2023 Chablis 1er Cru "Fourneaux" displays rich orchard fruit aromas verging on tropical. There is a kaleidoscope of fruit here which flows across the complex, layered palate into a powerful finish. This is easily the most open and ready for business of the 3 1er Crus.

Notes

Bill Nanson Burgundy Report: "Here in the Côte de Fourneaux/Pregirot in Fleys A silken width of ultra-pure yellow citrus – wonderful detail again. Hmm – as mineral as the last with more, and rounder, depth. I slightly prefer the extra directness of the last but I’m splitting hairs. Great classically styled Chablis again the finish more approachable than the Vaillons !!"(09/2024)
