The red wine Lacryma di Christi del Vesuvio Rosso brings the volcanic power of Mount Vesuvius to the glass. Mastroberardino produces this wine as one of Campania's leading wineries while honoring ancient viticulture and myth. According to local legend Christ wept over paradise's destruction so his tears fell on Vesuvius' slopes to bless the land. The wine derives its authentic Neapolitan winemaking essence from Piedirosso and Aglianico grapes which are native to the region. The wine displays deep ruby red color with violet undertones when poured into a glass. The wine presents strong scents of black cherry and dried herbs and crushed volcanic rock alongside subtle wildflower and smoke notes. The wine presents itself as medium-bodied with soft tannins and bright acidity. The wine presents red plum and raspberry flavors alongside earthy spice notes which are balanced by a refreshing mineral core that stems from volcanic soils. The wine finishes with a smooth and slightly savory character.

The 2022 Mastroberardino Lacryma Christi is composed of 100% Piedirosso that grows on the mineral-rich volcanic soils on the dramatic slopes of Mount Vesuvius. Adding to the drama, local legend says that vines sprang from the tears Christ shed after Lucifer, cast out of heaven, tore away a piece of paradise and dropped it to Earth, forming the Gulf of Naples. I’m happy to go along with this legend because this Rosso is delizioso. It offers bright and lively notes of fresh cherry, Earl Grey tea, violet pastilles, and damp autumn leaves. With food-friendly acidity and a breezy 12.5% ABV, it’s a great match for pizza Napoletana, Mozzarella di Bufala, and light bites like taralli and Marcona almonds.

Lacryma Christi is probably one of my favorite little niche styles of Italian wines - coming from *the* benchmark producer Mastroberardino, this Piedirosso is light, elegant, and everything I want out of a summer red. On the nose it is very savory - you get notes of pepper, warm spice, and a little bit of sulfur - but on the palate it is incredibly fruit forward; notes of fresh cranberry, underripe black cherry, with underlying notes of basil. You can certainly serve this on a chill, as the tannins are very light and acidity nice and high. Serve with lamb, lean pork, or any lemony chicken dish.

I feel so fortunate getting a chance to review all of these Italian wines we tasted today hours afterwards again, they benefit so much more from that time open than most other wines. While I remember liking this wine this morning, right now it's just absolutely stunning. There's such a pretty quality to the nose, and even the color is really lovely just a little bit translucent in the glass. The nose has a creaminess to it, peppered with red and black fruits, dried herbs, purple flowers, and a little bit of tarry earth at the finish. The palate is light and extremely elegant, there's a lot of crunchy fruits, with cranberry, pomegranate seeds, underripe raspberry, more dried herbs, and a little bit of spice. This has great acidity and just a light grip of tannins, a wine that wouldn't complain about being chilled down just a bit. I want to have this with a braised meat, or some pasta, maybe even a piece of firm but not too aged cheese. Absolutely perfect summer red.

Notes

Mastroberardino, founded in 1878 in Atripalda, Campania, is one of Italy’s most historic wineries. The family has preserved native grape varieties like Aglianico, Fiano, and Greco through 11 generations. Their production spans Taurasi, Fiano di Avellino, and Greco di Tufo, emphasizing terroir and tradition. They also lead the Villa dei Misteri project, reviving ancient Roman winemaking in Pompeii.
