Review Date: 08/2018The 2016 Châteauneuf-du-Pape Lieu dit Pignan is mostly Grenache (there’s 25% Mourvèdre) sourced from one of the great terroirs in the appellation. It is scheduled to be bottled in August of this year. This inky colored beauty gives up a primordial bouquet of blueberries, cassis, violets, lavender, and honeysuckle. Deep, full-bodied, and incredibly pure, with a mountain of baby fat, this awesome effort is going to take 5-7 years to shed some fruit and show nuance, but it's a brilliant effort.

Dark and winey, featuring a youthful core laden with dark plum, boysenberry and blackberry compote flavors. Licorice snap, roasted apple wood and tar details line the dense and fleshy finish. Has the energy to match the heft and should age well. (JM)

Opaque ruby. Powerful, spice-accented red berries, cherry pit and candied flowers on the highly perfumed nose. Juicy black raspberry, bitter cherry and lavender pastille flavors are sharpened and given focus by a suggestion of zesty acidity. Clings with strong intensity on an appealingly sweet, expansive finish given shape and gentle grip by fine-grained tannins. (JR)
