One of the distinctive features of this wine, and in a way a DNA link to all Art Series cabernet, is its savouriness. It’s the rolled tobacco, nori, iodine and whiff of new leather plus the cedary oak, but these are not separate, they form a whole impression. There’s also the core of excellent fruit, the structure, the supple tannins and the bright acidity. And the joy of drinking it. (JF)

The 2021 Art Series Cabernet Sauvignon is lighter in color and tannic intensity than the 2020 tasted beside it. No surprise for the vintages that birthed these wines. The latter was sunny, hot and dry, while the 2021 season was decidedly cooler, with more cloud cover and rain. This wine bears the fruits of the diligent labor in the vineyards and is one of the shining lights in the region this year. There are notes of raspberry and nori, moss and petrichor, blood and forest floor. This is a lighter style of Cabernet—and a lovely one at that. (EL)

The nose is perfumed and lifted, showing aromas of blackcurrants, boysenberries, cedar, tobacco leaves and graphite. The full-bodied palate has finely integrated tannins and focused acidity, giving complex notes of mulberries, wild blackberries, mocha and spices. Wonderfully balanced and fresh with an underlying power. Drink or hold. Screw cap.

Tightly bound nose, with good-quality oak wrapping cedar and spice around the fruit core. Salted plum, purple fruits, red berries, rosehip, rose florals, salted liquorice and crushed aniseed. Fruit is pert, fine and nimble, with chalky tannins, lithe acidity and graphite minerality. Time will reveal the underlying structure and strength. (CC)

The Leeuwin Estate Art Series Cabernet Sauvignon is a benchmark expression of the variety in Margaret River, a region that has solidified its reputation in recent years as one of the most exciting places in Australia for Cabernet Sauvignon. The 2021 vintage is pure elegance, with seamless integration of vibrant red fruit – red currant, plum, wild blackberry – and supple, polished tannins. Fresh oregano and thyme notes linger in the background, supported by subtle oak notes of nutmeg and vanilla. Medium-bodied on the palate, this wine offers a high level of concentration and fruit purity with an almost weightless feel on the palate. Very fresh and vibrant!

Notes

Simply put, Leeuwin Estate is an icon of Australian winemaking, consistently crafting wines that rival the best in the world. One of the five founding wineries of the now-famous Margaret River appellation in Western Australia, Leeuwin Estate was initially a cattle property purchased in 1969. With early guidance from legendary Napa Valley winemaker Robert Mondavi, who identified the site as ideal for premium wine production, Leeuwin Estate was gradually transformed into the remarkable vineyard and winery it is today. The estate is most famous for its prestigious Art Series range, which represents the pinnacle of their production. Each year, the winery commissions leading contemporary Australian artists to create original paintings for the labels, a tradition that began after a successful 1980 Chardonnay vintage caught the attention of the international wine community. The flagship Art Series Chardonnay is consistently rated as one of the best in the world, frequently compared to top-tier Burgundies for its balance of power and precision. The Art Series Cabernet Sauvignon is equally celebrated for its structured elegance and savory complexity. Both wines are included in the prestigious Langton’s Classification of Australian Wine, a recognition reserved for the 100 most highly sought-after Australian fine wines, recognized for their consistent performance and demand at auction. Today, the estate remains a family-owned operation under the stewardship of three generations.
