In 2019, Jayson Woodbridge of Hundred Acre established Summer Dreams, making cool-climate Sonoma Coast Pinot, Chardonnay, and Sauvignon Blanc. A winery for Summer Dreams is being built outside Healdsburg and will be fully operational in 2024. Ashley Holland, a protege of Bob Cabral, works in the cellar and focuses primarily on the white wines of Summer Dreams. I spent several afternoons with Woodbridge in 2023, interviewing him for an upcoming profile, and we savoured several bottles of the Summer Dreams wines after the conclusion of the interviews. He's pretty proud of these cuvées, and he should be. For all his attention on Cabernet Sauvignon, the Chardonnays, Pinot Noirs, and Sauvignon Blanc in the portfolio drink like they've been in production for years already. The Sauvignon Blanc comes in a Burgundy bottle and is incredibly rich and pure, with enticing layers of crisp orchard fruit skin, grapefruit zest, crystallised ginger, and sea spray notes. There’s so much energy and drive on the palate, fueled by scintillating acidity, bright and buoyant Pink Lady apple, fleshy Bosc pear, and fragrant wildflowers entangled in a bed of seagrass. Generous and long, with a mea culpa of baking spices and a hint of vanilla cream. Number seven of my top 10 wines of 2023. (JC)
