More wild scrub brush, violets, and peppery notes emerge from the 2019 Côtes Du Roussillon Villages Lesquerde L'Esquerda, a Syrah-dominated blend (there is 30% Grenache) that’s medium-bodied, nicely textured, balanced, and even elegant. It’s another seamless, beautifully done Roussillon from this estate that will deliver loads of pleasure over the coming 4-6 years or more.

An intense nose with wild dark berries, dark plums, game, cloves and some undergrowth. Mineral driven with firm but precise tannins, a characteristic of the granite soil. Medium to full body with good balance. Crunchy fruit with plenty of juicy cherries and black pepper at the end. From biodynamically grown grapes. Drink or hold.

The cement-aged 2019 Cotes du Roussillon Villages Lesquerde l'Esquerda is a blend of 85% Syrah and 15% Grenache, from relatively high-altitude (400-500 meters above sea level), granitic sites. Scents of crushed stone and blueberries mark the nose, while the medium to full-bodied palate finishes dusty and long, framed by fine-grained tannins. (JC)

L'Esquereda is one of the later additions to Michel Chapoutier's stable of wines from Domaine de Bila-Haut, his Roussillon property. An hommage to his Rhone roots, this Syrah-dominant wine is grown on granitic hillsides and the wine echoes the savory, meaty depth found in the Northern Rhône. Roussillon’s warm climate brings added ripeness and richness. Blackberry confiture, fig jam, grilled meats, and Provençal herbs create a layered, expressive palate with both structure and elegance. Just entering its peak drinking window, it benefits from a brief decant and offers outstanding value. This is one of the best steals on the shelf and not to be missed!

Lots of softer red fruits, and an almost maraschino-y cherry give way immediately to loads of purple flowers, and an herby pepper. The palate has some red cherry, and a little bit of overripe raspberry, and just a touch of bramble-fruit along with another heavy dash of herby pepper on the finish. There's a lot of savory notes, but there's a little bit of juiciness on this that just makes it a little more alluring that it might typically be for me. I could see having this with some pork chops, or a roast pork, or other pig-based preparations; but just as easily I could see myself having this with something more gamey or even just a prime rib. This is at such a nice price point, that it would be a shame not to at least try one out, this is the type of wine that seamlessly pairs with your dinner.

Notes

Michel Chapoutier established Bila-Haut in 1999 when he determined he could make top notch wines in this region that rivaled his own from the Rhône. The winery, built in Latour de France, has vineyards throughout the region. All Domaine wines are farmed biodynamically. L'Esquerda comes from parcels in the granitic soils near the town of Lesquerde. Composed of primarily Syrah with the rest Grenache and sometimes a splash of Carignan, this is another touchstone wine from this touchstone producer.
