Spice, red and black fruits, leather, pressed flowers, cured meats, and baking spice notes all define from the 2022 Côte Rôtie Lieu-Dit Montmain, a 100% Syrah that's wonderfully textured and seamless. Medium to full-bodied and supple on the palate, with beautiful overall balance, this will benefit from 2-3 years of bottle age and drink well over the following decade. Drink 2027-2037.

The deep purple-hued 2022 Côte-Rôtie Lieu-Dit Montmain uses fully destemmed grapes. Peppercorn, black cherry, blackcurrant, cedar and spice box are front and center in this well-made, concentrated 2022 red. Round and inviting, it concludes with good energy on the sapid finish. (NG)

Notes

The history of Ferraton begins in 1946 when it was founded by Jean Orëns Ferraton when he began acquiring vineyards in Hermitage, St-Joseph and Crozes-Hermitage. Son, Michel Ferraton joined his father years later and helped expand the estate's holdings. It was not until 1998 when the Godfather of the Northern Rhône, Michel Chapoutier, was welcomed as an investor in the winery and brought along his interests in organic and biodynamic farming. In 2008, oenologist Damien Bresset was added to the team and with his restrained hand, the wine began to truly express the best of the terroirs and their current profiles. Specializing in single site and appellation focused wines, Ferraton has one of the most exciting portfolios in the Northern (including a few surprise Southern) Rhône wines. This 100% Syrah from micaschist and granite soils on south to southwest-facing slopes in the northern part of the appellation is destemmed and macerated in concrete vats for 3–4 weeks before aging 12–16 months in French oak. The result is a deep, elegant wine with pure red and black fruit, floral notes, fresh minerality, and a long finish.
