2023 Samuel Louis Smith "Montañita de Oro" Monterey County Pinot Noir
96
Jeb Dunnuck
A cuvée of three sites (40% Pelio, 34% Michaud, and 26% Double L), the 2023 Pinot Noir Montañita de Oro displays a rocky, creamy, velvety texture and tremendous red fruit, while retaining aromatics of rose and dried herb. The grapes were 60% whole-cluster fermented, contributing impressive texture and a highly enjoyable, complex experience of elegance and light-bodied intensity.

A lighter hue in the glass, this appellation-spanning blend of Pelio, Michaud and Double L vineyards offers cranraspberry, brisk pomegranate, toasted sage and zesty white-pepper aromas on the nose. The palate’s
tart red-fruit flavors are cut by more spicy pepper elements and a touch of game. (MK)
