2023 Walter Scott "Justice Vineyard" Eola-Amity Hills Pinot Noir
97
Jeb Dunnuck
What will be their last vintage of this cuvée, both red and white, the 2023 Pinot Noir Justice Vineyard is a transparent red hue and is highly expressive on opening. It benefits from some air to blow off its more reductive notes before opening to notes of red cherries, pomegranate, crushed roses, and darker undertones of purple flowers. Medium-bodied, it has underlying depth and power, with ripe tannins that build and gravelly richness that comes through the long finish. Drink 2028-2050. 97+

The Wine Independent
The 2023 Walter Scott Justice Vineyard Pinot Noir from the Eola-Amity Hills spent 15 months in 40% new French oak and comes from this historic 40-acre site, long tended by the Casteel family. The nose opens with flinty reduction, graphite, and crushed basalt before moving into red cherry, hibiscus, and hints of exotic spice. On the palate, it unfolds with remarkable energy, layering pomegranate, wild strawberry, and blood orange zest against undertones of sea spray and herbal tea. The texture is at once supple and taut, carried by fine tannins and a brilliant streak of acidity that frames its depth. The wine closes with a finish of extraordinary clarity and persistence, mingling mineral tension with delicate florals and savory nuance. This is an unforgettable Justice Vineyard bottling, showing both precision and grandeur, and will reward patient cellaring for a decade or more. Exceptional with roast squab served alongside black truffle risotto, where the earthy richness of the dish is lifted by the wine’s vibrancy and mineral drive. Only 150 cases were made. Highly recommended and editor’s choice.

Decanter
Justice Vineyard sits on an exposed ridgeline in the Eola-Amity appellation in direct contact with the winds through the Van Duzer Corridor. Unctuous umami aromas of smoky soy, mushrooms and turned earth leap forth. with elements of alpine herbs lightening the savoury depth. The palate is focused as the umami core of forest floor, brine, and hoisin sauce are silken and dark, and there's a definite feral character as this wine finds balance in savoury, umami depth with whisps of wild mountain berries and a tingly, mineral finish.

The acclaimed Justice Vineyard is a 40-acre site farmed by the Casteel family who founded Bethel Heights winery in 1977. This is marvelously reductive on the nose with gunmetal and rocky notes that meld well with pretty guava fruits and red rose water accents. The palate is plush and soft with serious tension and a great sense of salinity throughout the drinking experience. Gorgeous to enjoy now, savor this beauty over the next twenty years. Drink 2025-2045.
