2022 Domaine Alary Cairanne Vieilles Vignes

Review Date: 04/2025The 2022 Cairanne Vieilles Vignes is incredibly floral, with notes of rose, red fruits, raspberries, spice, and some minerals all defining its aromatics. Medium-bodied and elegant on the palate, if a touch mid-weight, it’s nevertheless nicely balanced and seamless. This 50% Grenache, 25% Syrah, 15% Mourvèdre, and 10% Carignan blend was aged 18 months in concrete vats and will drink well for 5-7 years.

The 2022 Cairanne "Vieilles Vignes" from Domaine Alary is made from its customary blend of sixty percent grenache, twenty percent syrah and ten percent each of mourvèdre and carignan. As was the case with the 2021 version, the 2022 again comes in at 14.5 percent octane. The wine delivers a superb aromatic constellation of raspberries, fruitcake, bonfire, pepper, garrigue, a complex base of soil and a gentle floral topnote redolent of roses. On the palate the wine is deep, complex, full-bodied and tangy, with superb depth of fruit at the core, firm, chewy tannins, fine focus and balance and a long, very promising finish. This is another 2022 that shows the influence of the drought in the concentrated aspect of its sugars, tannins and acids. It will demand plenty of time to soften up its tannins, but should be a good drink once it is ready to drink.
