The 2022 Nero d'Avola Sgarretta is fruit focused and intense. Crushed blackberries and cherries mingle with nuances of sage to form its inviting bouquet. It washes across the palate with ease, showing crisp wild berry fruits and violet inner florals. The 2022 leaves a tart sensation, finishing spicy and long with a saturation of raspberry that fades away slowly. (EG)

So, what makes Nero d’Avola from Sambuca di Sicilia so special? It’s all about balance. In many warmer parts of Sicily, Nero d’Avola can become heavy or overly jammy. Here, in the Sgarretta vineyard, the Giovinco family crafts a wine that captures the grape’s generous spirit without sacrificing elegance. The calcareous clay soil provides the foundation, building a wine with structure, depth, and a subtle mineral backbone. The hot days ensure perfect phenolic ripeness, yielding classic flavors of black cherry, plum, and a touch of licorice. But it’s the cool nights, thanks to Lago Arancio, that truly define this wine. They lock in a vibrant acidity that brings freshness and energy to the palate, lifting the rich fruit and making this a sophisticated, food-friendly red. Aged for six months in large, neutral oak casks and six months in bottle, it’s a beautifully pure expression of a very special place.

Although there are numerous excellent Nero d'Avola wines available, it seems to be often overlooked. This outstanding value Sicilian red is the ideal weeknight table wine that pairs especially well with pizza, pasta, meats and cheeses. Soft, spiced cherry and black cherry flavors abound with fresh acidity and mild tannins.

Notes

Giovinco Winery, rooted in Sambuca di Sicilia since the 1920s, is a family-run estate now helmed by Vito Giovinco and his nephew Antonino. With 50 hectares across western Sicily and Mount Etna, the winery blends tradition with innovation, focusing on organic farming since 2006. Their vineyards benefit from limestone-rich soils in Sambuca and volcanic terroir on Etna, producing expressive DOC wines from native varietals like Nero d’Avola, Grillo, and Nerello Mascalese. Giovinco’s approach is hands-on and low-intervention, allowing the land to speak through the wine.
