A blend of Nerello Mascalese and Nerello Cappuccio from their parcels across the mountain. Aged in a combination of tonneaux and large casks, this Etna Rosso is both powerful and elegant. Notes of wild red berries, ash, and spice lead to a structured palate with fine-grained tannins and a long, persistent finish.

This is just so good, so friendly, and at such a great price I couldn't help but pick it as one of the wines I reviewed today. We tasted a line from this producer that were all exceptional, but you gotta pick your favorite and this was a favorite of the whole tasting. The nose is bright, high toned red fruit and just really pure all the way through, a cacophony of red swirling up at you and then becoming this single harmonious and beautiful thing, it's like raspberries, red cherries, rose petal, a little touch of hibiscus, and bright fresh alpine strawberries all just working together and sing out so prettily. The palate is bright and clean with a lingering sort of toastiness from some kind of oak, but nothing that ends up being disharmonious or out of whack, just a nice toasty finish at the end. It's just this really beautiful package and it makes complete sense with every sip. Just great.

Notes

Giovinco Winery, rooted in Sambuca di Sicilia since the 1920s, is a family-run estate now helmed by Vito Giovinco and his nephew Antonino. With 50 hectares across western Sicily and Mount Etna, the winery blends tradition with innovation, focusing on organic farming since 2006. Their vineyards benefit from limestone-rich soils in Sambuca and volcanic terroir on Etna, producing expressive DOC wines from native varietals like Nero d’Avola, Grillo, and Nerello Mascalese. Giovinco’s approach is hands-on and low-intervention, allowing the land to speak through the wine.
