From their high-altitude vineyards on the volcanic slopes of Mount Etna, this Bianco is a masterclass in tension and complexity. Primarily made in stainless steel to preserve its vibrant, mineral-driven core, about 10% of the wine is aged in wood, adding a subtle layer of texture and spice. It’s a wine that crackles with the energy of its volcanic terroir.

The nose of the 2023 Giovinco Etna Bianco brings to mind Riesling, with slate and subtle wisps of smoke drifting around delicate fruity notes. Composed of Carricante and Catarrato, the palate illuminates the stage with cathedral-candle impressions--beeswax, burning wick, and a sprinkling of ash--creating something understated, complex, and quietly sophisticated. Crunchy pear, mouth-watering Eureka lemon, shaved fennel bulb, and whole coriander seed come together with the precision and polish of a smartly tailored Italian suit.

In addition to their Catarratto, we also offer their Etna Bianco. This minerally white is made from grapes cultivated on the volcanic slopes of Mt Etna in Sicily. It's a very terrior-driven wine with additional hints of leesy aromas. It's medium-bodied with a bit less texture than the typical Chardonnay and bright underlying acidity.

Notes

Giovinco Winery, rooted in Sambuca di Sicilia since the 1920s, is a family-run estate now helmed by Vito Giovinco and his nephew Antonino. With 50 hectares across western Sicily and Mount Etna, the winery blends tradition with innovation, focusing on organic farming since 2006. Their vineyards benefit from limestone-rich soils in Sambuca and volcanic terroir on Etna, producing expressive DOC wines from native varietals like Nero d’Avola, Grillo, and Nerello Mascalese. Giovinco’s approach is hands-on and low-intervention, allowing the land to speak through the wine.
