2021 Hillwalker "Estate" Mt. Veeder Cabernet Sauvignon
98
The Wine Independent
The 2021 Hillwalker Vineyards is blend of 85% Cabernet Sauvignon and 15% Merlot. Deep garnet-purple-colored, bright, vibrant red currants and black raspberry scents jump from the glass, followed by hints of violets, garrigue, and Indian spices. The full-bodied palate is electric energy and vivacious red and black fruit layers, supported by firm, grainy tannins and a lively line, finishing long and layered. This wine was left on skins for 25 days and aged in about 20% new French Oak and 80% concrete. The natural beauty of the wine is striking. One of the most exciting new wines to come out of Napa Valley in recent years. 98+

Notes
Hillwalker is a small, organic, biodynamic, dry-farmed estate that sits at 1000ft elevation on Mt Veeder. The farming and winemaking is executed with meticulous precision by Thomas Comme who previously ran Pym Rae Estate (also on Mt Veeder) owned by the Tesseron family of Château Pontet-Canet in Bordeaux, where Comme's father was the longtime winemaker. Thomas brings his own unique, holistic style or farming to Hillwalker, along with an absolute dedication to dry-farming. Production happens in the estate's small, hillside cave winery and is just 150 cases in 2021. Renowned wine critic Lisa Perotti-Brown MW called Hillwalker "one of the most exciting new wines to come out of Napa Valley in recent years" awarding 98+ points.
