Rich ruby-colored but transparent, the 2022 Pinot Noir Jessie James Vineyard is beautiful in the glass, with a floral and ripe perfume offering notes of framboise, light herbal notes, wild fresh herbs, and a touch of dark black fruit coming through, with black raspberries and dark stones. On the palate, it has a rich tannin structure, a ton of clarity (as all of Evan’s wines tend to express), and a long finish. It’s going to benefit from more time. Drink 2026-2046.

The Jessie James site is at over 200m in the Eola-Amity Hills. An eastern slope that's exposed to the cool winds of the Van Duzer Corridor. The vineyards were planted in 1996 and are organically farmed. Winemaker Evan Martin calls out the floral elements of the Jessie James as the vineyard's hallmark. A blend of Pommard, Wadenswïl and a little bit of Dijon clone. Aromatics of violets and cherry flesh dried lavender and smoky rose petals. The aromas evolve from dried flowers to earthy and woodsy notes. Even though Martin usually uses only about 10% whole cluster in this wine, this Pinot Noir feels like it’s got more of that whole cluster's powerful freshness and vibrancy character. This is one of the lightest Pinots in the portfolio, with a chalky texture and minerality. It's giving a ton of energy. The palate shows refinement and freshness, with mouthfuls of spiced blood orange, smoky clove, and a white peppered spice to the finish.

Int'l Wine Review
The 2022 Martin Woods Pinot Noir from Jessie James Vineyard, rooted in old vines planted in 1996, shines with a glowing medium ruby core and a neon pink rim. Its aromatic profile is layered with Bing cherries, crushed raspberries, red licorice, and sweet spices, balanced by subtle notes of Blood orange zest, dusty herbs, and delicate white flowers. On the palate, this Pinot offers perfect balance and structure, with crunchy tannins giving it a lively energy. Its smooth finish hints at the wine’s potential, needing just another year in the bottle to fully blossom. Highly recommended.

Email ScottMy initial note on this wine says "lovely, just lovely!". It is indeed that as well as being a complex bugger with a savory, tart and spicy character. Black raspberry fruit, tart cranberries, a dollop of black cherry. There are also flavors of cinnamon and fragrant dried herbs. It is very pretty, and it is also a complex little beast that works well with some breathing time. About an hour or two to get those lovely floral scents. Age-worthy of course! Will last in your cellar for many years to come.

Email AaronAfter a few hours open, the nose is still slightly tense with a lot of ripe high toned cherry alongside ripe pomegranate, sweet rhubarb, and a fine dusting of dried herbs. There's also some cocoa powder and the smallest little tidbit of leather in the background right at the tail end of the nose. The palate is more dense than expected, with a lot of richer and riper cherry red and black cherries alongside a kiss of raspberry and a soupçon of fennel and then at the very end a luscious bit of rose petal. This is dense and almost brooding, and now that I have fully described the wine already I am going to give a brief listen to the album that Martin Woods Winery has chosen to pair with this wine and see how I feel they compare and contrast. The album is from Makaya McCraven, and is named "In These Times", coincidentally also released in 2022. The track I will be listening to is highlighted on their website and named "The Calling" which is track number 7. The music starts out a bit slow and sad, with a contemplative harp in the background. There's a playful sort of brooding, much as the wine has a playful brooding nature. Then a horn of some sort, I am not a professional music writer as I have been told, so it's just a horn of some sort comes sashaying in, a little bold at the outset, some light drumming in the background and then a slight tonal lift made it all very dreamy. Then it's on the next track, with the dreamy rhythms of "The Calling" over way too soon. This wine has the same sort of dreamy and ethereal qualities to it, and while there's enough that someone less willing or wanting to contemplate their Pinot Noir will certainly enjoy this wine, those looking for a wine with astounding depth and who want to contemplate a bottle over a whole night will find this to be what they're looking for.
