Another top tier ancestral mezcal from the young master in Minas. There's no question to me the Rolando will be part of the pantheon of great Minas distillers in the future, but right now he's clearly out to prove something. This beautiful expression of clay pot distilled mezcal is so distinctive and delicious it must be tasted to be understood. I'll try to do it justice. Crystal clear with a subtle hint of smoky vibrancy. The nose is the perfect balance of sweet and savory offering gorgeous Tobala fruit peaches and pomegranate absolutely at war with a savory almost black olive character. It could be Clairin on first nosing, but with air the depth and rich agave spice builds. On the palate it absolutely envelopes the senses a huge oily mouth feel - with the subtle savory note providing a central structure with which the rest of this complex spirit drapes across the palate. It's full of sacred herbs, sweet candied fruit, dense earthy spice and a creamy texture. This is a beautiful expression that I'm simply feeling very lucky and honored to have been able to selected for the shop. Fewer than 40 bottles available here. Don't sleep on it.
