From a site at 2,200-feet elevation and a vineyard named for a former state senator, 2021 Cabernet Sauvignon Fellom Ranch Montebello Road is generously floral in perfumed red fruit and an abundance of iron. Grippy and concentrated, it retains an impressive level of freshness throughout its full-bodied boldness, showing structure and elegance within an undeniable level of intensity that speaks to the extreme nature of the grapes' growing conditions.

Sharing a fence line with Ridge Monte Bello, Fellom Ranch Vineyard is another historic property in this part of the Santa Cruz Mountains that has long produced world-class, long-lived Cabernet Sauvignon of distinction. Ian Brand gets fruit from two old, east and north facing blocks planted in 1980 and 1982 to a historic Beringer selection or “clone”. Wanting to highlight the aromatic intensity and vitality of this old vine Cabernet grown on limestone soils, Ian ages his Fellom Ranch Cab in a large format Austrian Stockinger cask. The wine is so fine and detailed yet subtly powerful at the same time. Bright, lifted, aromatic red and black fruit. Crushed rock minerals, hints of camphor, sagebrush, leather and leafy tobacco. Enjoyable young because of the refined tannins, but clearly a wine that will age decades in the cellar if you have patience.

Notes

Notes on the producer from Antonio Gallon for Vinous: "Brand is one of the most dramatically changed estates in Napa Valley. Proprietors have totally shifted away from the opulent, turbocharged wines of the past towards an approach that favors far greater freshness. The results thus far have been impressive, to say the least. The wines I tasted on my most recent visit were nothing short of exceptional." (12/2023)
