The al dente fruit is so attractive with blackcurrants, dark plums and orange peel. The palate is medium- to full-bodied with tannins that start slowly, building at the end to a crescendo of intensity and power. It’s muscular and chewy but not overdone. A great second wine of Pichon Lalande. Needs time to soften and come together. Best after 2029.

Deep purple-hued, the 2022 Pichon Comtesse Reserve is based on 54% Cabernet Sauvignon, 34% Merlot, 10% Petit Verdot, and the rest Cabernet Franc, raised 14 months in 50% new barrels. It's beautifully done and has a ripe, layered, yet still classic style in its ripe black and blue fruits, graphite, and floral notes. It's medium to full-bodied and has a round, layered mouthfeel and ripe tannins. I’d be thrilled to drink a bottle any time over the coming 15+ years.

Readers shouldn't overlook the 2022 Resèrve de la Comtesse, a lovely wine that's one of the most accomplished second wines of Bordeaux. Offering up aromas of sweet minty berries, burning embers, pencil shavings and violets, it's medium to full-bodied, lavish and aromatic, with an almost exotic core of fruit, powdery tannins and a penetrating finish. The 2022 Réserve de la Comtesse Is a sexy wine. Plush contours wrap around a core of black cherry, plum, graphite and dried flowers. The 2022 is unusual in that it includes all the Petit Verdot produced at the property. That's a decision that paid off handsomely. (AG)

This is everything people love about Pauillac in a more seductive, earlier-drinking style. Layers of cassis, blackberry, graphite, and cigar box unfold slowly from the glass, carried by a classic Left Bank structure that feels both powerful and polished. There’s real depth and pedigree here—the kind of wine that immediately signals “serious Bordeaux”—yet the texture is seamless and remarkably inviting for such a young vintage. A stunning introduction to the Pichon Comtesse style for anyone craving the dark, aristocratic soul of Pauillac without stepping all the way into Grand Vin pricing.

Like a lot of the 2022s this has a ripe and pretty nose, really fully fruited. There's ripe black cherry, blackberry, a little touch of cassis, and then more spices and a little dried green herbs. The tannins are incredibly well integrated and very fine, one could easily argue you don't need anything with this, and they'd be wrong but they could make a compelling case. Since this morning the opening has given it a good amount of depth and length, the finish feels like it's where it should be. Really nice bottle.

Notes

91 points Neal Martin for Vinous: "The 2022 Pichon Comtesse Réserve, bottled in April 2024, has a perfumed, floral bouquet with lovely lift and a mixture of black and blueberry fruit scents. The palate is medium-bodied with a ripe entry, hints of salted licorice that tincture the black fruit and density countered by a keen line of acidity. Just a touch of balsamic livens up the finish. This is very fine." (2/2025)
