Take this GY as a kind of summary of Gualtallary through two of the varieties that so far best interpret this mountainous area in the north of the Uco Valley. It's 60% malbec and 40% cabernet franc from vineyards at different altitudes. Vinified with 30% stems, it's rich in fruity aromas and flavors, juicy tones of tart red and black fruits, herbal tones, and a firm tannin structure similar to the sensation of chalk on the palate.

92+ points "The red 2021 GY is a blend of 65% Malbec and 35% Cabernet Franc that fermented with 50% full clusters (the Malbec was with stems and the Cabernet Franc destemmed) and matured in used 225- and 500-liter oak barrels for 12 months. It has moderate ripeness and alcohol (13%) and very good freshness and is the red where the chalky minerality appears. It's clean, young, fresh and precise. It's medium-bodied, fresh and balanced, with fine-grained tannins." (LG)

This is a blend of Malbec and Cabernet Franc, which could be one of the greatest combination of varietals in Argentina. Grown in the Gualtallary subzone (the GY) in the Uco Valley. Here the high elevation, calcareous soils, and cooler climate bring the best out of both varietals. When you pour this the first thing that stands out is the color. This is so intensely colored. The wine has a deep core that is only accentuated by the vibrancy of the magenta tinged rim. The aromatics are more subdued than expected, it has the classic mix of dark red fruits with a bramble accent, but it doesn’t jump out of the glass. The intensity of the color is matched by the flavors on the palate. This is all red fruits and pluots, think farmers market sample tray with more types of pluots than you can name, with some plums thrown in too. Behind the fruit there is that subtle floral lift that Malbec can have as well as a higher-toned herbal thing. There is a touch of oak, it is not heavy handed and really only makes its presence known with the texture. The tannins are polished and softly present, giving the medium bodied wine just enough support. This delivers an elevated Malbec experience.

Notes

Michelini i Mufatto is a family-run winery founded in 2019 by Andrea Mufatto, Gerardo Michelini, and their son. Located in La Cautiva, a remote, high-altitude subregion of Gualtallary in the Uco Valley at 1,600 meters, their vineyard is one of the most distinctive in South America and they quickly become one of Argentina’s most exciting modern wineries. Working at extreme elevations in La Cautiva—a remote, high-altitude corner of Gualtallary—the family produces wines of remarkable tension, elegance, and precision. Their 2021 "GY" is a mountain-grown blend of 70% Malbec and 30% Cabernet Franc from three parcels at varying elevations. Fermented together with 30% whole-cluster Malbec and native yeasts, the wine is aged 18 months in barrel. It captures the rugged, high-altitude terroir of Gualtallary, balancing rugged power with finesse and elegance.
