Vinous

The 2020 Montepulciano d'Abruzzo tempts the imagination with a darkly floral bouquet that blends wilted violets with rose petals, balsamic spice, crushed blackberries and lavender. This displays textures of pure silk that are soft, supple and pliant. Savory herbal tones and licorice traces complicate a wave of ripe citrus-laced red and black fruits. The 2020 finishes long and staining yet full of energy. A pleasantly bitter sensation and tart raspberry nuances pucker the cheeks. While the Montepulciano of Amorotti is typically focused on elegance and fruit, the 2020 is more tightly wound, full of tension and zesty in character.

Well, Montepulciano is one of the varieties that are the most sensitive to the producer and vineyard site. Some of the best but also some of the worst wines I have ever tried are Montepulciano and this is what makes this bottle outstanding. Montepulciano d’Abruzzo is often thought of as a bold, rustic wine, but when grown in the right terroir and made with precision and patience, it can be refined, structured, and incredibly complex. Amorotti’s Montepulciano is again fermented using indigenous yeast, but this time is aged for 2 years in Slavonian barrels. This Montepulciano is yes bold, with ripe blueberry and plum notes, but it has an incredible minerality and meaty undertones. The balance is incredible here. The nose is full of bergamot and citrus peel. Slightly notes of smoky, savory delicious textured aromas. This Montepulciano is far from the jammy, fruit-driven examples often found on the market—instead, it captures the balance of fruit, acidity, and minerality that defines Loreto Aprutino’s finest wines.

Notes

Amorotti’s Montepulciano d’Abruzzo is a refined yet powerful expression of the varietal, balancing intensity with elegance. The nose unfolds with layers of ripe black cherry, wild blackberry, and violet, intertwined with notes of tobacco, leather, and a touch of Mediterranean herbs. The palate is structured and deep, with firm yet polished tannins supporting a core of dark fruit, earthy spice, and a distinct mineral edge. A long, persistent finish reveals hints of cocoa, licorice, and balsamic depth. A beautifully crafted Montepulciano with great aging potential.
