2022 Amorotti Cerasuolo D'Abruzzo

94

Vinous

Spicy from the first tilt of the glass, the 2022 Cerasuolo d'Abruzzo is impossible to ignore as a pleasant smoky reduction blows off to reveal dried sage, wild strawberries, stone dust and violet pastille. This is pleasantly ripe in style, with a solid core of salty minerals to balance. Crisp wild berry fruits flow across the palate with ease. Blood orange notes combine with a tactile concentration as the 2022 tapers off with sweet tannins that frame the experience nicely. Without a doubt, the 2022 is one of the top Cerasuolos of the year, displaying remarkable complexity and refinement.

Cerasuolo d’Abruzzo, often mistaken for a light red rather than a rosé, it is actually just a wine on its own, its own category. It is just what it wants to be, a pink wine. Funny enough I love to suggest this when people want a pairing with lamb, kebob, or charred meat. This wine shines when paired with this type of food. It is in fact the traditional pairing with Arrosticini (sheep skewers, traditional of Abruzzo). Cerasuolo was pink way before the trend of Rose start hitting our shelf. The oldest documentation found about this style goes back to the 18th century. Which is mind-blowing if you think about it. Like its white counterpart this wine is aged 1 year in large Slavonian oak, and to be called Cerasuolo it must be made only with Montepulciano d’Abruzzo. The wine has red cherry and quince aromas, sweet clementine zest and toast sesame seeds to complete the symphony. Also, here the fermentation is spontaneous. It is vibrant with a nice herbal lift the help balance the wine. If you do not like rosé, but you are not in the mood for a white and you want something to serve chilled, this is for you.

Notes

Amorotti’s Cerasuolo d’Abruzzo is a vibrant and structured rosé, showcasing the depth and intensity characteristic of the region. The nose bursts with wild strawberry, pomegranate, and blood orange, accented by floral notes of hibiscus and a hint of crushed herbs. The palate is textured yet fresh, with bright acidity framing juicy red fruit and subtle saline minerality. A long, crisp finish lingers with notes of citrus zest and a touch of spice. A serious and food-friendly Cerasuolo with remarkable energy and depth.
