The incredible Siete Leguas distillery is unquestionably one of tequilas very best, but they don't have the bravado as many of the more popular brands. They've remained at their beautiful authentic distillery in Atotonilco el Alto since it was founded by Ignacio González Vargas in 1952. Since then they haven't spent a lot money or energy marketing their products, instead they put all their focus on producing the most authentic and delicious mezcal possible. And for years rumors of a special high proof blanco only available in Jalisco meandered the tequila nerd circles. It apparently exists and now it's finally here - one of their first new products in years. Widely accepted as one of the very best blancos available at any price, the new Siete Leguas 47 is a masterpiece of traditional production. Let's do it! The nose is impeccable with a depth and complexity that is rarely experienced in modern tequila - pungent aromas of over ripe cooked agave - sweet fibers of agave, black pepper, fresh herbs of all kinds, dense grass, hints of black olive and coriander seed. Huge hit of minerals on the palate with zesty citrus, roasted spices, more fresh herbs and sweet tropical fruit. This is absolutely stunning. Quickly it's up there with my top 5 blancos on the shelf.
