2018 Masi "Costasera" Amarone Riserva
93
James Suckling
Review Date: 03/2024An Amarone that nudges Port, such is the density and liqueur-like notes of cocoa nibs, mocha, root spices and dried cherries. The tannins restrain the flavors into a sense of composure on one hand, while drying out the finish on the other. Very drying. Presumably, this simply needs time, or at least it is best to hope so. Drinkable now, but best from 2030. (NG)

Notes
Masi’s "Costasera" Amarone della Valpolicella Riserva is a profound and opulent expression of the appassimento method, showcasing intensity, structure, and remarkable aging potential. The nose is deep and layered, unveiling ripe black cherry, dried plum, and fig preserves, interwoven with notes of dark chocolate, sweet tobacco, and exotic spice. On the palate, a rich, full-bodied texture is supported by velvety tannins and vibrant acidity, balancing the wine’s concentrated fruit and tertiary complexity. Hints of espresso, licorice, and balsamic depth unfold on the long, resonant finish. A powerful yet elegantly structured Amarone, built for extended cellaring.
