Aromatically, this is almost a blend of the Baker Ranch and Campbell Ranch as there is some of everything, which is to say more spice and less floral influence. The palate is a sort of blend as well as the texture of the medium-bodied flavors is not quite as refined though there is good volume and richness to the powerful and robust finale where the supporting tannins are borderline grippy but not hard or unripe. This is also a wine that is very clearly built-to-age and one that is going to need it. Patience absolutely advised.

Fruit for the 2022 Pinot Noir Comptche Ridge was picked after the devastating heatwave, and winemaker Anthony Filiberti says half of the crop at Comptche Ridge was lost. It’s showing some of the challenges of the vintage with slightly muddled scents of black cherry, pomegranate, tea leaves, earth and bergamot. The medium-bodied palate is rounded and gently chewy with an earthy finish. (EB)

From the coastal mountains of the northwest Sonoma Coast, we delve inland and further north to the Comptche Ridge Vineyard, deep in the forested wilderness of Mendocino. This small, remote site is surrounded by redwoods and Douglas fir on Franciscan shale and fine sandy loam soils. Farmed without irrigation, the mature vines are predominantly Swan clone—a selection reputedly smuggled in from Burgundy by the late Joseph Swan. This heritage vine material and the vineyard’s heavily forest-influenced terroir create one of the most unique and complex expressions of Pinot Noir you’ll find anywhere. There’s a tangible forest-floor and undergrowth element that leans darker and more brooding than the West Sonoma Coast bottlings. Powerfully structured with brambly fruits, this is serious Pinot Noir.
