The grand vin from Nicolas Glumineau is 78% Cabernet Sauvignon, 17% Merlot and 5% Cabernet Franc, and the élevage was in 65% new oak and 35% second-fill oak barrels for 19 months. Remarkably it includes 17.5% press wine, up from the usual 13%, added with consultation from Eric Boissenot who is a big press-wine advocate. This accounts for 60% of production. An expressive, confidently dark, toasted and harmonious nose, with powdered chalk and crushed white gravel dusted over concentrated black cherry, blackberry and currant fruits. The palate is fresh and bright, with plenty of peppered dark fruit freshness, toast, liquorice and tar with black pepper energy, lots of great substance here wrapping all this up, supported by grip from the rich tannic substance. It continues with layers of dark and salted fruits, salty minerals, an intense confidence, and a long and peppery finish. Stunning potential here, with great energy wrapped up in this supple, mouth-watering, sinewy texture, which adds a sense of restraint to what is a confident style. A breathtaking, spine-tingling wine, which simmers with incredibly tight-knit tannin in the length, but with never a hair out of place. Superb, and surely a new benchmark for the estate, one which we can watch evolve over the next three or four decades.

The 2022 Pichon Longueville Comtesse de Lalande has turned out even better in bottle than I anticipated, bursting from the glass with aromas of cassis and blackberries mingled with scents of licorice, violets and pencil shavings. Full-bodied, layered and enveloping, it's suave, seamless and complete, with faultless precision, pristine integration of tannin, controlled sweetness and a long, expansive finish. The 2022 manages to unite the sensuality that's the estate's calling card and the ripeness of the vintage on the one hand, with a sense of Pauillac classicism on the other, threading the needle to deliver one of the finest wines of the vintage and a benchmark Pichon Comtesse. It's a blend of 78% Cabernet Sauvignon, 17% Merlot and 5% Cabernet Franc that spent 18 months in barriques (three months more than was formerly the case), two-thirds of which were new. As I wrote en primeur, there's more than a hint of the 1982 about this wine, and like the 1982, the 2022 will offer an exceptionally wide drinking window. (WK)

A blend of 78% Cabernet Sauvignon, 17% Merlot, and 5% Cabernet Franc, the 2022 Pichon Longueville Comtesse de Lalande is deep garnet-purple in color. After a little coaxing, aromas of blackcurrant jelly, juicy plums, and wild blueberries waltz out of the glass, followed by nuances of red roses, damp soil, tar, and licorice. The medium-bodied palate is tightly wound, with impressive tension created by mineral-laced, crunchy black fruit layers, framed by firm, grainy tannins and seamless freshness, finishing long and savory. pH 3.8. Shiny and striking, this delights from the first sip giving a burst of strawberry and citrus acidity before salty minerality comes in the form of chalky tannins, graphite, pencil lead and slate. Really quite mineral. It's sleek and classically styled, no overt ripeness of fruit although there's concentration in the frame and power that thrusts the flavours forward. Detailed and joyous, it's pent up with muscles and tension but where other wines are showcasing that brawn now, this also delivers a ton of juicy acidity and lift which makes this so joyful. I love it. (GH)

The 2022 Pichon Lalande has the potential to be an all-time great—a remarkable feat given the estate’s nearly unparalleled track record. Yet it’s hardly a surprise, considering the extraordinary run Nicolas Glumineau and his team have been on over the past decade. While 100-point scores and comparisons to the ’82 have become almost routine here, the greatness of the ’22 is only now beginning to quietly reveal itself. I’ve heard multiple first-hand accounts from those who believe this is their new gold standard, and several tastings on our end are convincing me they may be right. What’s magical about the 2022 Pichon Lalande is how deftly the vintage was handled—the depth and ripeness of the growing season are perfectly counterbalanced by modest alcohol (13.6%), bright acidity, and a wealth of typicity and PLL character. There’s remarkable intensity for such an elegant, restrained, and precise wine. It’s also unusually accessible, making its retention of Pauillac complexity and character all the more impressive. The more I taste the ’22s, the more convinced I am that a new benchmark is being set by those who mastered the vintage. Pichon Lalande is clearly one of the standouts of 2022—and unquestionably a First Growth–caliber wine.

A wine with the potential to be an all-time great, this Pauillac is a study in power and elegance. The nose is intensely pure, offering aromas of cassis, violets, and graphite. On the palate, it combines profound depth and fruit ripeness with black pepper and bright acidity. The tannins are exceptionally fine-grained, providing a sophisticated framework for decades of evolution.

The craziest thing about this wine is how insanely approachable it is already, and it's just a 2022. This has such class and sophistication, I get this whole "we're not worthy" vibe tasting it, wondering exactly what I did right to be able to sit here and review this wine. This is just impeccable from start to finish, the tannin profile is incredibly fine and well-integrated, but you can already tell that this is going to lay down and just perfect itself further time and again over the years, recreating what perfection means each time. The fruit is fresh and pretty, really supple, creamy, and lush with blackberries playing second fiddle to the most immaculately ripe cherries and cassis. There's barrel spice and the promise of leather somewhere in there, the earthiness radiating through the rest to come to the forefront. The palate is just gorgeous with the ripe fruit showing, the oak in the background and earthy herbaceousness bringing the two together in exactly the way you want it to. This is worth the price of admission, hands down.
