The 2023 Gigondas Clovis Saurel is 100% Grenache that saw an extended maceration in concrete tanks followed by 15 months in demi-muids. Also gorgeous, with sweet cherries, black raspberries, black pepper, Provençal garrigue, and spring flowers all emerging from the glass, it's medium to full-bodied and has a pure, layered, elegant mouthfeel, beautifully integrated acidity, fine tannins, and a blockbuster of a finish. It's incredibly well-balanced and is just a stunning example of old vine Grenache from this magical region. Drink bottles over the coming 15 years or so.

The enticing 2023 Gigondas Clovis Saurel carries the potential to rival the outstanding 2022 rendition. Spice-tinged red fruits mingle with black cherry, white pepper and a touch of menthol. Finishing remarkably long and refined, the 2023 is shaping up to be yet another brilliant Clovis Saurel from the talented Romain Saurel. (NG)

Notes

Domaine Saint-Damien is a historic family estate in Gigondas, farmed by the Saurel family since the early 19th century and today led by Romain Saurel, with organic certification since 2012. Their Gigondas vineyards are spread across several key parcels, including Les Souteyrades, La Louisiane, Le Gravas, and Clos de la Marquise, each contributing distinct expressions of the appellation. These sites feature varied limestone- and clay-rich soils and a high proportion of old-vine Grenache, often complemented by Mourvèdre. In the cellar, traditional concrete fermentations and élevage in large foudres emphasize structure, freshness, and the savory garrigue character typical of top Gigondas. The Clovis Saurel cuvée is sourced from old-vine Grenache planted in sandy and clay soils, grown at low yields to maximize concentration and flavor. After a 24-hour cold pre-fermentation maceration, the grapes are fermented at 28°C with gentle délestage, followed by combined bâtonnage and remontage to build texture and complexity. The wine is then aged for 15 months in 600L demi-muids, producing a refined, layered expression of Grenache with depth, purity, and elegance.
