2014 Flavio Roddolo Barolo

K&L Buyer
Review Date: 05/2025

The 2014 Flavio Roddolo Barolo stands as an insider's treasure because it remains traditional while expressing soulful and artisanal characteristics. Flavio Roddolo operates from Monforte d'Alba where he maintains an independent winemaking approach to produce limited quantities of unyielding wines from his family vineyards through minimal winemaking intervention. The wine presents dried cherry scents alongside worn leather notes and forest floor aromas and dried rose petals with anise and iron and delicate spice undertones. Roddolo follows a patient approach to winemaking by extending the aging period of his wines beyond standard requirements while using large neutral oak barrels without any haste. The current vintage from this producer is what we have in front of us. The Barolo presents itself as a wine from a bygone era because it lacks any artificial elements while delivering authentic Nebbiolo flavors that result from extended aging.

Notes

Flavio Roddolo’s Barolo is a powerful and traditionally crafted expression of Nebbiolo, showcasing structure, depth, and a rugged elegance. The nose is intense and complex, revealing aromas of ripe red cherry, black plum, and dried rose, intertwined with notes of tobacco, licorice, and earthy spice. The palate is bold and structured, offering deep red fruit, firm yet finely grained tannins, and a distinct mineral core, all balanced by vibrant acidity. A long, commanding finish lingers with nuances of balsamic, cedar, and savory herbs. Antonio Galloni for Vinous writes: "It's a shame Flavio Roddolo's wines don't get a little more attention and love, as they remain some of the most compelling artisan wines in Piedmont." (10/2013) Monica Larner is a fan too, as she writes in Wine Advocate: "The wines of Flavio Roddolo offer a unique perspective onto the time-tested traditions that have slowly and steadily put Barolo on the enviable growth trajectory it enjoys today. These are the wines of yesteryear. They are like a blueprint of what Barolo knew it would become before it got there." (06/2017)
