2024 Coriole "Estate" Fiano McLaren Vale South Australia
95
James Halliday
Review Date: 11/2024Raised in tank (75%), old oak (10%) and concrete (15%), with the latter finding increasing favour with winemaker Duncan Lloyd over oak. Brightly fruited and subtly complex, with a savoury, backbone and oyster shell minerality. Lemon pith, tart golden apple, green almond, yellow grapefruit and soft herbs seasoned with fennel seed and white pepper. There’s a seamless quality to this, peppy acidity neatly meshed into the finely-tooled mouthfeel, escorting the flavours through a crisp and very long exit.

Notes
Coriole is a leading family-owned winery in McLaren Vale, South Australia, founded by Hugh and Molly Lloyd in 1967. The original farmhouses on the property were built in 1860, however, and the original vineyards were planted in 1919. While the estate is most well-known for old-vine Shiraz, today it is also regarded as a leading pioneer of Italian varieties, planted by Hugh and Molly’s son Mark in the 1990s and early 2000s. The climate in McLaren Vale is decidedly Mediterranean, much like that of central and southern Italy, with cool, rainy winters and dry, warm summers. After travelling through Italy, Mark noted the similarities in both the climate and the landscape and hypothesized that Italian varieties would be a good fit for McLaren Vale. In addition to Sangiovese, he planted Fiano, a white variety is native to Campania, east of Naples. It has since thrived in this corner of Australia, showing vibrant stone fruit notes, along with lemon oil and golden pear, all supported by refreshing acidity. In the years since, several other wineries in South Australia have planted Fiano, a testament to the success of the variety in the region. Today, the Coriole Fiano is a benchmark wine in South Australia, widely recognized for both its varietal typicity and great value. Bottled under screwcap, this is a refreshing and food-friendly wine, great on its own but also a wonderful pairing for seafood and appetizers.
