The 2019 vintage is on display here, evident in the detail and aromatic nuance of this 2019 Morus Cabernet Sauvignon. It has cassis bramble, pomegranate molasses, cocoa nib and mulberry. The acid has a juiciness that offsets the supple, ductile tannin. I rarely point 2019 over 2018 in Margaret River—although I am a huge fan of the 2019s—but through the lens of this beautiful wine, the 2019 season is shining so bright and fresh. It is pure, even. The fruit is 100% Wilaybrup Cabernet Sauvignon, 35-year-old Houghton selection clones. From 2016 – 2020, the vineyard remains true to the cuvée. Destemmed, the berries are split just enough to let some juice out and start fermenting. Undergoing a cool, long ferment in stainless (peak of 25 degrees Celsius), the cap is managed as required. As the fermentation progresses the management evolves. Post ferment, the wine is left on the skins for a further two to three weeks. It is matured in 225-liter French oak barriques (Taransaud, Jupilles, Allier, and "just a smidgen of Bertrand," 55% to 60% new) for 14-18 months, depending on the season.. (EL)

Morus as in mulberries, so expect plenty to feature here. The wine is stately, full of dark ripe fruit, bitter chocolate studded with raisins and nuts, woodsy spices and savoury meaty notes. It’s full bodied and dense with expansive tannins and fans of such styles will be pleased. Closure: Screw cap. 14% alcohol.

Aromas of black and red currants, fresh coffee, bark and pine needle. Medium-bodied with bright acidity. Fresh and red fruit with some savory undertones. Leafy herbs and pipe tobacco. Complex.

The 2019 Cabernet Sauvignon Morus is settling nicely at four years of age as it offers up a rich core of blackberry, blackcurrant and Wilyabrup gravels with a well-weighted backbone of toasty oak. It is pretty fleshy in style, with significant but pliable tannins that are well-matched to layers of red currant with hints of chocolate. Good overall definition and solid length will see it continue to drink well over the medium term. (AH)

Margaret River is widely regarded as one of the premier locations in Australia for growing Bordeaux varieties, and Bruce Dukes’ Domaine Naturaliste wines are gorgeous representations of the distinctive geography and huge winemaking potential of the region. Surrounded by the Indian Ocean on three sides, Margaret River is a relatively young region, with winemaking beginning in the late 1960s, but the area is blessed with ancient soils and a gentle maritime climate that allows grapes to easily achieve optimal ripeness. The region also delivers some of the best values in the world in regard to Bordeaux-inspired wines, and the 2019 Domaine Naturaliste “Morus” Cabernet Sauvignon is a prime example of this. Now with over five years of age, still-youthful red fruit notes (red currant, Santa Rosa plum) swirl together in the glass, balanced by more savory dried green herbs, cocoa powder and button mushroom, all tied together by highly finessed, elegant French oak undertones that provide the perfect balance, neither overpowering nor eliminating the sense of terroir in the wine. At well under $50 per bottle, this is an unbelievable value that could easily best many examples from Napa or, dare I say it, even Bordeaux?

The nose already has some signs of a little bit of age, there's a little touch of oil-cured olive and a little bit of a loamy mushroom note deep in the background, along with some fresh green peppercorn pyrazines. All of those more savories are accompanying a nice rich black cherry and blackberry compote with just a little bit of thyme. There's also just a little touch of something pleasantly horsey, but it's just a player in this game, not a driving factor. The palate is really gorgeous with great acidity with some pretty savory notes, but there's a ton of fruit there still, rich and ripe blackberry and bramble-fruit, a little bit of raspberry playing in with the blackberry, the pyrazines are less present and it's more fruit-focused. The finish has some lingering barrel spice, a bit of cedarwood, and some pepper that all plays with what remains of the fruit, the savory slowly taking over until the finish is just a little bit toasty.

Notes

After nearly 30 years of working alongside producers in Margaret River, Western Australia, winemaker Bruce Dukes established his own label, Domaine Naturaliste, in 2012. Renowned for its exceptional winemaking conditions, the Margaret River region extends into the Indian Ocean and is bordered by water on three sides, with Cape Naturaliste to the north and Cape Leeuwin to the south. Domaine Naturaliste is located at the foot of Cape Naturaliste, inspiring the winery’s name. Bruce brings a wealth of experience from both local and international winemaking, including four years at Francis Ford Coppola’s Niebaum-Coppola winery in California, along with a master’s degree in Viticulture and Oenology from the University of California. His wines reflect a deep connection to the distinctive terroir of Margaret River.
