We’ve opened a few bottles of the Go de Godello recently in the stores, and the response has been unanimous: this might just be one of the most enjoyable – and affordable – wines of the summer! You might not have heard of Godello as a variety (and with good reason, since it nearly went extinct just a few decades ago) but it is quickly gaining a reputation as one of Spain’s most exciting white varieties. Grown in northwestern Spain, just slightly more inland than Galicia, Godello has many structural similarities with Chardonnay, including brisk acidity and great palate weight, but adds in soft floral and juicy stone fruit elements, similar to Verdejo. A faint green herbaceous edge rounds out the package, delivering a lot of flavor and complexity for an incredibly reasonable price. The Go de Godello is enjoyable on its own as a summer sipper, perfect for outdoor events and aperitivo hour, but it also has enough weight and depth to open a second bottle for dinner.

Hailing from a region that has, in recent years, captured the attention—and then the hearts—of wine professionals across the industry, Soto del Vicario’s 2024 Godello checks every “summer sipper” box I can think of. Grown inland enough to reflect the warmth of the sun, yet still marked by a definitive coastal salinity, the wine opens with a tropical nose and follows with a shockingly clean, bright palate. It’s effortlessly drinkable on its own and remarkably versatile at the table. Summer salads, carne asada tacos, grilled shrimp, and sheep’s milk cheeses all come to mind.

Notes

Godello is likely an ancient variety, dating back to Roman-era viticulture. It nearly went extinct in the 1970s, however, with only a few hundred vines remaining. Replanting initiatives revitalized Godello, and today its one of the most common varieties in northwestern Spain after Albariño. On the nose, Godello is sometimes compared to Chardonnay, with elevated acidity and a textural component, though with a stone fruit character that is reminiscent of Verdejo. Though some Godellos are vinified entirely in steel, barrel fermentation is also common, which is how the Soto del Vicario is produced.
