2022 Sapaio "Volpolo" Bolgheri
94
James Suckling
Restrained brambleberries with licorice root, slightly leafy eucalyptus and integrated graphite. Full body with elegant, velvety tannins, crisp acidity and a tight-knit structure. Power and extraction here, but a good, toasty finish with a sweet-tobacco aftertaste. One of the best examples of 2022. Drinkable now, but best in 10 years.

Notes
Sapaio’s Volpolo Bolgheri is a refined and expressive Super Tuscan, showcasing the richness and structure of Bordeaux varieties in coastal Tuscany. The nose reveals deep aromas of black cherry, cassis, and plum, layered with notes of cedar, graphite, and sweet spice. The palate is velvety yet structured, offering juicy dark fruit, polished tannins, and a vibrant mineral core, all balanced by fresh acidity. A long, elegant finish lingers with nuances of tobacco, balsamic, and dark chocolate.
