It is amazing how this unfurls in the glass. As if those old vines have a point to make - not so much look at me rather, I am all about grace. Everything is just so. The red and blue fruits, the dash of spices and the cedary oak that's tucked in well. It's medium-bodied yet there's length once the supple tannins finish gliding across the palate. (JP)

96+ This 2016 Shiraz 1860 Vines is a style unto itself. The fruit tastes like it comes from old vines—powerful yet restrained, savory but not dried out—it's a bit of a marvel. It is distinct. There are notes of hot red earth, leather, autumnal leaves, roast meat crust, pink peppercorns, oolong tea, bush smoke (in a good way) and embers, and it also has rosemary and black cherries. It's classic, in a way, although you may not viscerally understand that if you're not from Australia. It's an evocative wine, a wine of place. And it's still on the ascent. (EL) 96+

This shows notes of spiced plums and blackberries with hints of toasted spices, walnut and gun powder. Medium- to full-bodied with soft tannins. Fresh and blue-fruited on the mid-palate with notes of spices and leafy herbs. Drink or hold.

Notes

Established in 1860, Tahbilk is one of Australia's most iconic and historic family-owned wineries. Located in the Nagambie Lakes sub-region of the Goulburn Valley in central Victoria (about 75 miles north of Melbourne), Tahbilk is a winery that “should be visited at least once by every wine-conscious Australian,” as Jeni Port of the Halliday Wine Companion recently wrote. Most well-known for their seriously old vines — Marsanne planted in 1927 and pre-phylloxera Shiraz planted in 1860 — Tahbilk also presents serious value, offering incredibly well-made wines for very reasonable prices. A true piece of Australian wine history, the wines of Tahbilk should be on every wine collector’s radar.
